This Robert H. Tewksbury scrapbook is a collection of newspaper articles dating from 1851-1899 pertaining to the City of Lawrence and includes such topics as local news and history, weather, religion, manufacturing, water power and the Merrimack River, public health, education, the Old Residents’ Association, finance, obituaries, whimsy and statistics pertaining to the city. One article of great interest is titled “The Hero in Lawrence, Visit of Lieutenant General Grant” dated August 4, 1865, chronicling the visit by Grant, his wife Julia and son Freddy to the city. Another contains a listing of names of men chosen in the Sixth District draft. A “Soldier’s Newsletter” dated May 16, 1863 (Vol. 1, No. 10/Brashear City LA) is included in the scrapbook. The city’s several houses of worship and its clergy were of particular interest to Tewksbury and several saved articles make mention of these churches and their early leaders. Obituaries of several prominent Lawrencians include John Kiley, Col. Jefford M. Decker, Father Louis M. Edge, Sylvester A. Furbush, Dr. William H. Burleigh, Nicholas G. Paul, Thomas Wright, Reverends James Taaffe, Jairus E. Davis, George W. Packard, George Knox, William F. Snow and Michael W. Gallagher. The newspaper clippings are from various Lawrence newspapers such as The Lawrence Sentinel, The Courier, Lawrence American, The Journal and as such are considered rare primary source material. A note included with the book, written by Eartha Dengler gives some insight to the scrapbook. It reads' "This is a scrapbook of Mr. Tewksbury-Treasurerof Essex Co. and President of Law. (sic Lawrence), Old Residents Assoc.-he was extremely interested in Law. (sic Lawrence) History and the Dorgan books are based on his manuscripts. A note included with the book, written by Eartha Dengler gives some insight to the scrapbook. It reads' "This is a scrapbook of Mr. Tewksbury-Treasurerof Essex Co. and President of Law. (sic Lawrence), Old Residents Assoc.-he was extremely interested in Law. (sic Lawrence) History and the Dorgan books are based on his manuscripts. There is a lot in this book that we have in no other source. E.". This book is located in Box B 76 located in the first floor Essex Company vault.

This scrapbook is a 10' x 7" x 3" brown covered book with the gold embossed name on the spine, "Report of the Chicago Relief and Aid Society". Robert Tewksbury re-purposed this book into a scrapbook. The newspaper articles are glued to the pages of the book are hand numbered from 2-435. Several pages have been cut out of the book. Several newspaper articles are loose.
