This book identifies the properties of each American Woolen Company mill throughout Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, Vermont, and Kentucky. Each mill within every state is identified by name, and the physical characteristics of the mill property is described. For example the Blackstone, Massachusetts mill (Saranac) description identifies that it was located practically at the boundary line of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The mill was named for the first white settler in Rhode Island (William Blackstone - arrival in 1635), and was near the Blackstone River. Blackstone is situated on the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. The principal industries in Blackstone were woolen, cotton, and rubber. In addition, the type of cloth produced (in this case fancy woolen and worsteds for men's wear), the type of equipment (cards, looms, spindles, boilers, water wheels), the number of employees at time of the book's writing (600), and cloth finished product (dye and finish) is identified. A pen and ink drawing of the mill complex is included. This information is identified for all mills included in the book. (See below for a complete list of the mills).
