Two double-sided flax quilts with an inner layer of cotton. Each is decorated with hand stitching. The binding on each is hand stitched to the quilt and has been replaced in some sections.

QUILT A: one side is a deeper shade of brown than the other. Condition: fair, with some staining and fabric holes. Dimensions: Width 67" , Length 78".

QUILT B: uniform color on both sides. Condition: fair, with minor staining and fabric holes. Dimensions: Width 59", Length 84 1/2".

The quilts were hand made from flax in County Cork, Ireland and brought here in 1849 by John Patrick O' Connor of Macroom (Ballymeekera) County Cork. John landed in Nova Scotia and brought the quilt by ox cart to Bridgewater, MA, and then to his new home in Methuen, MA.

This is a set of quilt squares with drawings and quotations on them related to the Bread & Roses Strike. The creator is Melissa Shook, who gave the squares the collective title of "Meditation on the 1912 Bread & Roses Strike. She was inspired by the book "Bread & Roses" by Bruce Watson. The drawings are mostly portraits, and the quotes are mostly from Watson's book. The squares were originally hung on a wall, and were meant to be display pieces.
