Generating a better life for future generations: History of water power in Lawrence, MA. Article prompted by the construction of a 23.4 million dollar project which included a hydroelectric power plant and fish ladder. Site is at existing Essex Company Dam on the Merrimack River and is to generate power by 1981. The article states, " The plant will cause no environmental problems in the area. In fact, the fishway will help anadromous fish - fish that must swim upstream to spawn- return to the Merrimack." Article includes sketches, history and plans.
