Book

Hardcover book.

George C. Whipple's "The Value of Pure Water" (1907), a first edition, was originally published in a collection of scientific papers, "Biological Studies by the Pupils of William Thompson Sedgwick" (noted in the Preface, p. iii). Whipple's main intention of this study is to explain how an impure water supply affects the "individual pocketbooks of the people," as well as the overall health and comfort of a community. On pages 50-52, Whipple has a summary of his study in list form. His overall study is a scientific analysis of the quality and effects of water, as well as a discussion on the financial considerations related to this topic.

On the title page, Whipple included a quote from Henry David Thoreau: "The cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life which is required to be exchanged for it." The page before includes a list of works by Whipple that were published with John Wiley & Sons, "The Microscopy of Drinking-water," and another edition of "The Value of Pure Water".
Discussion of water purity, hard water, water contamination, turbidity, water filtration, sanitary quality of water, etc. With tables.

Page 42 offers statistics on Lawrence's water filtration results.
