This book is a complete history of Lawrence dating back from the first European settlers of the area until Lawrence’s involvement in the First World War. The book begins by chronicling the first colonial settlers in the Lawrence area and the Native American settlers that previously occupied the land. After describing the first settlers Dorgan moves into the building of the city. In these descriptions he describes the first roads built in Lawrence and also the early ferry system that the city implemented. After his description of the early settling in the area the author moved from the early settlers of the area to the creation of the Lawrence and the water dam by the Essex Company. Next, the authors chronicles the rapid growth of Lawrence and their infrastructure. After explain the early infrastructure of the city, the author moves to describing the different government systems and departments the city created. This included description of the city government, their police and fire department, and their early public school systems. The next part of the book is filled with descriptions of the development of many different job fields in Lawrence. These descriptions include church history, journalism, mercantile development, the Lawrence Bar Association, and the social organization of the city. After giving out the descriptions of the city and the development of its infrastructure the author moves onto the major events of the early years of Lawrence. The first event discussed is the fall of Pemberton Mill in the 1850’s. Next, is the description of the Lawrence cyclone that hit the city leaving 10 dead and thousands in property damages. Next, is the strike of 1912 by the textile workers of the city. The author chronicles both the strike and the impact the strike had on the city. Lastly, the book describes the wars that Lawrence was involvement and the impact the wars had on the city and its citizens.
