It is broken down into eight chapters: Introduction; History; Construction; Processing; People; Decline; Restoration; and Epilogue. The book begins with a short history of the United States from the colonial period to the 1880s, and then focuses on the more specific history of Ellis Island. It discusses the history from its construction to its decline and then revitalization as a tourist site. The subjects of immigration, architecture, politics, and war run throughout the book. There are many images in the book associated with Ellis Island, including photographs, drawings, and paintings.
