Apart of a series of photos from the Asia in Lawrence Exhibit from 1996, curated by Janet H. Howell, and photographed by Loel A. Poor, this image shows The Oeun Soung Family, who were originally from Cambodia. In the back, from the left is Chhim Meaf, and Sokil, in the middle from the left is Sokham, Oeun, who is holding Brian on his lap, and Sokia. In the front from the left is Sophran and David Meaf. There is a statement from one of the family members printed below, it says, "Because my country is at war, you know, and all the people die from the war that's why, and you know, I run out from my country. I run out from the Khmer Rouge. I run out from the Vietnamese. My sponsor from Bristol, Connecticut. Very nice to my family, but her doesn't know that my family eat rice. Give me ham, fried cheese and milk. I eat but, you know, it make me so, not strong enough for them. I ask her give me a rice. She say learn to eat ham and cheese. They told me like that." Soung was a single father of five children. He worked on a collective farm in Cambodia, before escaping to a refugee camp. He lived with his five children, and his mother in Lawrence.
