Book

This first section of the book contains a description of the American Mill, Utopia Inc. - the progress of spinning technology, the adolescent and mature industry, senescence - the aging and deterioration of the functional characteristics of the mill industry. The second section of the book covers the mills 'as it is - the legacy', where it talks about how the industry became a shadow of its former greatness, Mills and the associated housing were conceived as interdependent where the more isolated the site, the more total the dependence. Mill Cities discusses the endurance and repurposing of the skills of the mill workers and the former mill buildings. The Epilogue summarizes the development of the New England mill rise and fall, along with the repurposing that started taking place as the industries moved out of the area.
