Title
The Valley and its Peoples
Subtitle
An Illustrated History of the Lower Merrimack
This is a large informational book regarding the entire recorded history of the Merrimack Valley, the river, and its many inhabitants across all time periods up until the creation of this book in 1977. The book begins with an explanation of the native people that once lived on the Merrimack, and how their communities eventually gave way to colonization by a settlement of Puritans. These puritans paved the way for further colonies, colonies that eventually became Massachusetts and its earliest cities, all running on the power of the Merrimack River. Cities like Lawrence and Lowell began to experiment with industry in the Merrimack Valley by erecting textile mills, again, powered by the nearby river. All of this information and more is painstakingly described and catalogued in this massively researched book, following the evolution of the Merrimack Valley and its inhabitants on a meticulous timeline.
