Book

This is the January edition of the National Geographic Magazine from the year 1951. The main content of the magazine is sandwiched between dozens of pages of advertisements, for items such as early prototypes of remote controls and antiquities like typewriters and "brand new" radios. The primary interests in this magazine are articles on the Indonesian Government at the time, Ancient Mesopotamia and, most importantly to this database, the industry surrounding the Merrimack river. The article on the Merrimack river quite literally follows the river from New Hampshire, through Lawrence and Lowell, and all the way to Newburyport, explaining on the way how the surrounding inhabitants take advantage of this river. Halfway through the article, a full-page picture of the Lawrence mills and the three bridges built over the Merrimack that connect the north and south sections of the city serves to punctuate the relationship the city has with the river.
