Summary: The narrator lived in the Merrimack Courts Housing project in the 1940's along with other "war widows", whose husbands were away during WWII. She moved away, but later returned after she and her husband divorced. She describes pleasant living conditions with strict rules - tenants were responsible for washing the stairs. There was a strong bond between the neighbors.
