Summary: The narrator has recently become the Director of Veterans' Services for Lawrence, in the office where he spent many hours volunteering after serving eight years in the Marines. He left for boot camp the day after he graduated from high school. He was a Marine Security Guard at the embassies in Damascus, Syria and Bishkek, Kyrgystan. He was a Staff Sergeant and a Tank Commander, receiving the Purple Heart for being injured in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
