The narrator worked in the mills, and eventually worked as a foreman. He felt that his father's job in the paper mill ("bull work") was much harder than his work. He liked the union and was eventually allowed to join as a foreman. Eventually he worked in the tool crib at Honeywell.
When everyone was working, the family could afford more luxuries and their mother felt as though they were "millionaires".
