Sketch of Catholicity in Lawrence and Vacinity
This book describes the lives of Catholics in an era around 1846 and the life of Father Ffrench, the first pastor of a little wooden church which was built on Chestnut Street, near where the present Church of the Immaculate Conception stands. After Fr. Ffrench's death, Rev. James H.D. Taaffe became pastor of the church and with increased parishoners he built a larger church with the same name. Years later he was inspired to build the Protectory of Mary Immaculate, an orphan asylum and home for invalids. Upon completion it was placed under the charge of the Sisters of Charity known as the "Grey Nuns." The Protectory still stands today and serves as an assisted living home as well as a nursing home. This is a very interesting and informative book for someone who wants to know about the establishment of the Catholic Church in Lawrence.
