Book

A book of published tributes, along with a few addresses made by Mr. Clarke. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1852. After school, he was a machinist at the old Machine Shop (later Everett Mills). Starting as a workman, he eventually became to direct labor and was responsible for large numbers of employees. He was first assistant to the mechanical director at Pacific Mills for three years, starting in 1854. This book follows the path of his life and reports the tributes paid to Mr. Clarke along the way.

Loose papers in the book contain Mr. Clarke's will, placement of his family's names on the 'group marker' (group 2) at Bellevue Cemetary. Emily Greene Wetherbee a prominent Lawrence citizen, educator and poet was survived by her brothers George (a railroad worker) and Isaac (who lived in the west) was interred in the Clarke family plot - and named on the family monument - see loose papers which were removed and put into a "Clarke" folder in the Individuals and Families box.

From the Bellevue Cemetary website: The Wetherbee School is named for Emily Greene Wetherbee, who taught there for years. Like many teachers of her time, she died a spinster (in the 1800s, teachers were not usually allowed to marry), and the Clarkes added her to the family plot. It was common for families to provide for people in situations like hers. The Clarkes also took care that the school be named for her.
