This soft cover publication tells of the disaster of the Pemberton Mill in 1860 and the devastation brought on by the collapse and fire which claimed close to one hundred dead. Many were women and children. Those who were on killed in the actual collapse of the building died in the fire which began before rescuers could get to them. After the disaster one co-owner, George Howe sold his interest to his partner, David Nevins, and Mr. Nevins' father-in-law, Jared Coffin, a former Nantucket sea captain. The Nevins lived in a mansion in Methuen. A new Pemberton was built in 1861 and had 859 operatives, 650 were female workers.
