Summary: The narrator, who attended the Hood School from 1939 to 1947, began first grade knowing only Lithuanian and Polish. He gives vivid detail about his assimilation into the class. When the school was being demolished, he went in - with a flashlight - and rescued one of the desks that he had used. He also gives a good perspective of a boy during WWII.
