Peripherally, Mr. Murphy refers to returning soldiers in WWI, his father's protection during the Strike of 1912 (he was City Solicitor), the flu epidemic, the stock market crash of 1929, the depression that followed, the economic improvement brought about by WWII, the good credit rating of Lawrencians, and observations about Lawrence's future.
