Summary: The narrator was a member of Lawrence's small Russian community, and the small congregation of St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, once located on Exchange St. before it was closed and later vandalized. The narrator's father built the church. She rescued the cross which was on top of the church. It is now on top of St. Xenia's Russian Orthodox Church on the grounds of Sts. Peter and Paul cemetery in Methuen, which was founded by the Russian community.
