Summary: The narrator was asked to work for Curran & Joyce on Common St. (a soft drink manufacturer and liquor distributor); she was chosen for the summer job, entering salesman's accounts in ledgers, because of her good handwriting. She describes the building and atmosphere. Later, still a student, she worked at Champion International Paper Co. in the Oxford Mill during the summer, checking reams of paper for quality. The paper for National Geographic magazine was made there. The job was tedious factory work, but paid better than other summer jobs.
